Writing Buddies

This pilot program aims to deepen our connection with a partner school while engaging with primary students for literacy enrichment at a crucial stage in their journeys as writers. Already-initiated fifth-grade poetry students at Morningside K-8 Academy are paired with students in a first-grade or kindergarten class at their same school. Fifth graders are guided through the process of assisting younger students in instruction of a favorite poetry lesson. Then, with the guidance of O, Miami teaching poets, the classes are paired up and fifth graders help their primary grade buddies to write a poem.
