I have learned to define a field as a space between mountains by Rio Cortez is the winner of the first annual Toi Derricotte + Cornelius Eady Chapbook Prize.

Created through a partnership between Cave Canem, The Writer's Room at
the Betsy Hotel, and O, Miami Poetry Festival, the prize honors one outstanding chapbook manuscript per year by a Black poet, regardless of the poet’s publication history or career status.

The manuscript was selected by National Book Award winner Ross Gay.

Rio Cortez is a Pushcart-nominated poet who has received fellowships from Poet's House, Cave Canem, and CantoMundo. She was a recipient of the Sarah Lawrence College Lucy Grealy Prize and the 2012 Poets & Writers Amy Award. She is a graduate of the MFA program at NYU. Raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Cortez lives and writes New York.
